SHIRLEY CRABTREE AKA '' BIG DADY '' (thanks to Jamsbo Rockda)

Now back in the 60's - 70's - now we had proper wrestlers then
Jackie Pallo - Mick McManus (both baddies them- The Royal Brothers
Goodies - often teamed up in bouts of tag wrestling
Billy Two Rivers - an Indian from Canada - so he said - a goodie
Johnny Kwango - African - a goodie - stuck to the script - an opponent did not
Johnny had - Johnny was - hurt badly - won in court - awarded compo - and rightly so!
Giant Haystacks - he WAS BIG! A baddie! in the wring - gentle giant away from the Wrestling ring

Must not forget - Adrian Street - who may of drevan the other side of the road
Or not
He camped it up some what - when the audience booed and hissed him - Adrian
Blew them a kiss - he was a baddy! He'd now again kiss his opponent on the cheek! he was that kind of bloke! - cheeky! - I recon today he'd be a gay icon

Both Giant Haystacks - and '' Big Daddy '' - specialist in The Belly Flop - big lads!

In the ring they wore uselessly bathing trucks - budgy smugglers - Dave
(he's Australian you know)
Others preferred to fight in leotards - garments of choice!
The audience - booed - and hissed the baddies - especially the old lady's -
One ran to the OUT side of the ring - stabbed a baddie with her hatpin!

Saturday afternoons looked forward to telly's on - grappling fans gathered to watch The wrestling
The I T V - had huge audiences - so much so - they put wrestling on Wednesday
Afternoons!
The shop business - were not happy - as woman staid home to watch the wrestling
The shop owners took the I T V to court - to get the I T V to stop showing the
Wrestling being shown on Wednesday afternoon - they lost the case!

Now back to ''Big Daddy'' A BADDIE - he were no better away from the ring
His attitude towards the fans - to the adults - and towards the kids - so bad
Now there could be an understandable reason fore ''Big Daddy's'' - attitude

His mum and dad - had their son Christean - gave his first name - Shirley
Now there was a time - Shirley - was like Robin - a name not gender - specific
Now I dear say many of you have listened to - Johny Chash's song -
A boy named Sue
He was born in Yorkshire - not a county for being a soft in
It did not end well - for the pop - his son gave him a right beating!

Now Shirley Crabtree - it is not known - if he had '' words '' - with his dad
But he sure had '' words '' - with others
He was a big girls blouse - as they say in Lancashire

Those were the days!

Ken, you took me right back to my schooldays, Saturday afternoons my sisters and my mum all watching the wrestling! Nothing like it, I do remember Giant Haystacks, Mick McManus and Billy 2 Rivers in particular!
Thanks for the memories, and the info too!

We had the wrestling here too in those days. Great fun for kids. Haystacks came here a lot, Spiros Arion, Abdullah the Butcher oh and Andrei the giant of course. We had so much fun watching and copying the moves. Thanks for bringing back the memories ken.

Yes, it was an amusing spectacle. I liked it when I was a kid. My grandfather in-law went to his grave convinced that the wrestling was deadly serious, and ready to curse anyone who suggessted that it wasn't.

Ken, you bring me back to a time when the joy of make believe wrestling was all consuming! They were showmen of the highest order. Your piece here does them justice!
