I recently joined a writing club. At my first meeting, we were asked to choose a quote from a favorite literary work and compose something based on its style. Following is the quote I chose and what I wrote.

beds of straw

Death makes angels of us all
and gives us wings
where we had shoulders
smooth as raven's claws"
- Jim Morrison, from his poem "An American Prayer"

we make beds of straw
in dark alleyways
and always sleep with open eyes,
ever peering into strangers' eyes
