written in a corner of city lights bookstore

after consuming keats and his brethren

the afternoon light coming slant throught window

and you, in shadows, somewhere distant

a romance

~

when first you looked across the room

i looked down, because i'm shy

i wished, i did, was loath to presume

your cheeks were as the rose’s bloom

your smile, i couldn’t help but sigh

when first you looked across the room

heady, was the aroma of your perfume

the scent, no desire had i to deny

i wished, i did, was loath to presume

lips and breath, i longed to consume

i dared looked up, and met your eye

when first you looked across the room

our hearts entwined, threads upon a loom

a fabric made of love’s sweet ply

i wished, i did, was loath to presume

our love, it did bind, bride and groom

though bride and bride, can we assume

i wished, i did, was loath to presume

when first you looked across the room

~

Well that shows how dumb I am. It is villanesque. Live and learn.

This is one of your best. The 4th stanza is so clever and beautiful. In fact it is all beautiful and the "room, presume" variations give it a classical feel. And it all lives within a wonderful but single moment :)

A villanelle! Very challenging. And this one is sweet and full of pheromones.

A difficult form but it doesn't intrude on the poem. Channeling the Romantics isn't easy either but this is very nicely done. I haven't pulled out my Keats in years, time to dust it off.

This beautiful poem has the sound of the formal romantic poets mentioned as they have influenced the writer.
A great job in writing this one.

This is a fine poem on its own, though I do hear echoes of romantic poets, like Keats.
