Curious and somewhat sad how motivation changes when home ownership exits the equation.

Home

For fifty years I've owned various homes
All were loved some more some less
I've laboured hard to make them known
As unique to me and the home's mistress

Gardens lawns paint particulars
All employed as bespoke dress
Made those homes quite singular
Joyful work without duress

Now I find I'm at sixes and sevens
With what to do to imprint my soul
On this new dwelling now my haven
For I no longer wear ownership's stole

You see I've chosen this time around
To rent this home instead of own

You do feel very different about a place when you own it compared to renting. You put more of yourself into it I think. But everything is temporary anyway and we really do not own anything. The hardest thing for my father to do in his life was to leave his home and go to a nursing home. I like this piece because it makes you think of these things.

I can't imagine or even conceive of leaving where I live, I have far too much junk and detritus of life - I pity my sons if they ever have to clear house after I am gone - but I understand your feelings, sometimes, I wish for clean lines with out responsibility of ownership - today I have committed a fortune to repairing the windows on this money pit - enjoyed the read

I'm with William. I love the soft rhymes of this poem. That's good writing.

I enjoy owning this house. It's fine and old. I hated owning a newer house in the suburbs, liked the cottage we had in the city, so I guess that the joy of owning one's home fluctuates with the residence. As for yard work, my wife and I have a serious conflict concerning that. I want the forest to retrieve our yard, forests being beautiful and well-suited to their surroundings. My wife comes at the yard like it's a beast which must be subdued (she's an engineer).

I did what you've done ten years ago. I miss less the house than I do the land though now I have a small woods that I didn't have then . . . I don't own it but hardly anyone ever goes there and so I think of it as mine. But home is first and last a place in the heart and is wherever we are. I think your home is your boat and wherever it will take you.

As someone who has always rented, I've often wondered what it would be like to be able to paint the walls any color I choose or nail up pictures without having to worry about security deposits. :) The upside is that I can always just pick up and move without having to worry about getting rid of the old house.

I love the rhymes and the light tone of the piece. I'm sure you will find a way to make your rental feel like home. Best wishes.

As a homeowner most of my adult life I appreciate the pride and care and constant maintenance that brings us happiness in our home, but I can imagine the freedom that renting must bring, and I have been known to long for that.:)
Perfectly portrayed.

Curtains, pictures, throw rugs... these are all things that can help make your rental abode "yours." But the people, feelings, thought and conversations (the history of your soul in the living space) are the real imprint and what make your home your own.

some are reluctant to own, for fear that the home will own them. clearly you were not of that school. yet, renting may offer a pleasant respite, and allow you to imprint your soul in other ways.
