A Rose

How can I compare thee to a Rose ?

You have a less pleasing effect on my nose.

And why malign that innocent tree
Which unlike you
Has never hurt me.

I could liken you to a summer`s day...

But I really don`t feel inclined that way.

Sniff.

That last line is so indifferent, which is probably worse than thorny, since what it really says is: "I don't even care enough to be mad." Nicely composed, despite the bitterness and disillusionment.

It would appear as if the bloom is off the rose. This is a delightfully bitter poem.
