Listen to Dire Straits "Romeo and Juliet"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OaTaEX8Kh8

This is a tough one for me to read and post.

Life is a Dire Straits Song

I think of when I suddenly saw

You standing on a ladder outside

My second story window,

Shirtless, and smiling,

Paintbrush in hand

And you nearly gave me a heart attack.

I wonder how the story would be

If Juliet loved Romeo

But he not she

But that isn’t how the song goes

It’s stuck in my head now,

You shouldn’t’ve come around here

Painting by my window like that

There’s nothing I can do about it.

And Juliet, in the song,

When they made love she used to cry

And I think that I would, too

I shouldn’t have fallen for the pretty stranger

Who seemed to hold a promise

But makes no love songs

I don't know who loaded the dice

Maybe someday I’ll realize

“It was just that the time was wrong.”

Or maybe that wasn't it at all.

I told you. That's a really sad song. I can't listen to it often, especially not right now. Maybe everybody ends up feeling that song at some point. Too bad. It would be better if everyone felt I'm Walking on Sunshine at some point.

I suppose love is almost never reciprocated equally, or often, not even close. Great minds though...

OMG, I swear I didn't read this before I wrote mine! I did read your comment on Lawrence Beck's poem though, a couple hours ago, and was impressed that I had been thinking about that song just last week, and watching the video on youtube. So I decided to write a poem about it as well. Great minds, I guess.

this is a beautiful melding of poetry and song, touching and bittersweet, beautifully expressed. i had never heard the song, even so it's incredibly familiar and understandable.

you put your heart on the line for us, thank you.

you never know.
