Wallace Stevens once quipped
that English and French
are the same language

they are closer to being the same
than Italian and English
that's for sure

although when I read
Dante Gabriel Rossetti
I hear Italian in his English

dancing dactyls
embedded in his iambic

I think there are 1700 words that are 'the same' between English and French, but only about 80 between English and Italian. But what I find fascinating is hearing a foreign language spoken with an English regional accent, which is the reverse of what you are referring to concerning your observation of Dante Gabriel Rossetti perhaps. It must work both ways.
