This is part of a larger sequence called "Angelus": the third of the three poems.
among women
what of all the girls
who had thoughts
who read books
who asked questions
who got periods
who didn’t get periods
who sucked unfiltered smoke into their lungs
whose tongues shoved ashtray language
into the open mouths
of all the boys & other girls
who ached & burned for them
what of all the highschool girls
who knocked back Jim Beam
who drank tequila & ate the worm
who listened to “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”
& “Piece of My Heart”
what of all the undergraduate women
whose dates didn’t listen
when they said no
when they yelled stop
what of all the women
laughing and weeping after work
as they gather in healing circles
women of bravery & brightness
women of seasalt & sarcasm
happy to be alive
because it was August
& too hot
for the petty frigidities
of a cramping religion
