Scolded like the child that I was
When you were once stronger, once bigger, once smarter
No, I’m afraid I’ve grown into my mother’s anger
Fits like a glove, you’d be surprised -
What a scared child can shed when they find their spine
I tell my friend that this behavior - it is not me, not really
I just have to meet him exactly where he is
Even if it is not the most pleasant place
No, I’m afraid I’ve grown into my father’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Fits like a glove, you’d be surprised -
What a scared child can shadow to get past the night
I see it as weakness all around
A child who couldn’t defend themselves
Turns into an adult who wants to hold their own ground
No, I’m afraid I’ve withered into the shell of who I used to be
Still fits like a glove, as if it was waiting for me
What a scared child builds over time becomes instinct
