Even in the smallest of ways
Asking if I’ve ate, if I’ve slept,
If I need a place to stay”
She sighs out, “I don’t want to be an unpaid maid
- an enabling therapist or your doting mother”
“But - it is in your bones, in your petite frame,
To carry and nurture runs in your veins”,
He continues, “Worst of all, you’ll do it
- with a smile on your face
It’s a womanly strength, but a strength all the same
To always bend backwards but never break”
She retorts, “Being a woman isn’t being emotionally chained -
If the kindness I consciously choose binds my hands,
I will simply cut them off
Make no mistake, there is no worse pain -
Than the accusatory daggers you throw
Acting as if they’re merciful
You play the role of a helpless child
While instructing me what I should already know”
