For a Certain Poet
Poet of craft and swerveless skill,
Exemplar, teacher, sage:
You do not prize the glib, the shrill,
Those who are "all the rage."
Calmly you walk through Bedlam, loud
With voices scorning measure:
You give us songs serene and proud,
With humour that we treasure.
You work your words with steady zeal
To curb this world's disorder
Where intimate injuries cannot heal
And dull hearts shrug at murder.
Angel, survivor, clear as a bell,
Paint us a picture of glory;
Out of the thorns of an earthly hell,
Ring us a rose of a story.
