Fooling God

On Easter morning
she turned to me

her lipstick all worn off

saying
"don't forget your penance"

I did not
go to confession
because the redemption seemed too easy

I let my sins get lost
in darkness
as I waited patiently
for the living-room carpet to fly

"whats gotten into you, Mary"
she asked every fourth hour

but her eyes came from a photograph
and her dress was written

I was not
I was real

I feared they would know
I feared they would fit me in a frame on the mantle as well

and dust me off

while I was still breathing

like her

I kissed her forehead of glass
every morning
knowing it was only her smile frozen in time

her blood still running warm
through the ornamented frame

then I said my penance

This gave me chills..So many emotions here, being forgotten, feeling guilty, and so much more. EXCELLENT!

This has a painful, lost, sadness about it. To be put in a frame and forgotten only to be dusted. that is truly heart-penetrating. To be fearful and mistrusting of what is suppose to bring redemption and renewal is frightening. I am haunted by this poem. I feel lots of emotions are riding on this lonely train of words. kathy
