Based on an anecdote related in the young poets' anthology Salting the Ocean, edited by Naomi Shihab Nye, illustrated by Ashley Bryan (Greenwood Books, 2000), p. 108.
[caroline]
Caroline writes poems
on the back of her homework,
in the margins of her notebook.
She imagines the world
beyond the long grasses,
the thronged stalks
of waving grain
the solemn-eyed cattle,
of her family's farm
in western Canada.
In much the same way,
from my two-room flat
on the fringes of a mid-sized
American metropolis,
I sit here imagining
the world of Caroline.
How grateful she is,
how grateful I am,
for the evidence
of "poemists" out there!
An archipelago of solitudes.
A communion of souls.
