203. The lover to the loved
Stay a while, my love, and keep me company
just for the night, and you shall not regret it,
for the more you give, the more you will be given,
and I will not give you up, because you are my soul,
that is, you are my life, you hold it in your hands,
and there is no more life for me except your love.
I know this borders on the burning out
and draining of our energies,
there is no more exhausting thing than love,
and yet we need it and can't live without it
even if it must consume us in the end
like in the slowest kind of suicide,
but it gives so much pleasure on the way
and, above all, much more life than we already possess.
