Sonnet 109 To Tai-Ana on Christmas Day 2006

A distance to traverse, a range too far,
leaves us apart twelve hundred empty miles
while I in warmth await your calls that are
my universe, your laughter, tears and smiles.

Through all these lonely days, familiar sights,
I wait each morning for your faithful call
each afternoon and later – your good nights
while watching us in pictures on the wall.

I ponder often how this life must change
to grant your wish for family still intact
but cannot find a way we could arrange
a life with all without the love it lacked.

For now there is no more that I can do
except to call, to write, and think of you.
