Sonnet 110, Sonnet 111 The Morning Before Christmas and the Mourning After

Sonnet 110 Morning before Christmas

This Christmas Eve before that cheerful day
wide eyes of children restless glowing still
bright lights lit paths for reindeer, Santa's sleigh
and gifts from Him to all who show good will.

This Day outweighs all holidays, the thrill
of being good for only goodness sake
some ancient Saint proffered would last until
forgetfulness wipes out the oaths they make.

Warmed milk left out and cookies children bake
lie waiting for his coming, Santa Clause,
who checks the lists he made, makes no mistake,
that some believe, while others have no cause.

So children sleep still clinging to their dreams
that happy smiles will turn to joyful screams.

Part II

Sonnet 111 The Mourning, After

My child went off to bed with hopeful sigh
that what she wished so long with soulful prayer
would not be difficult to make or buy
with Santa's help, to waken, see it there.

This night before beneath the tree was bare
expecting that some miracle this night
the joyful sounds of bells would fill the air
and morning promised happiness, delight.

By dawn she bound as if a bird in flight
with searching eyes what gift might have her name.
But not a one was there for her in sight –
though Santa came, but he was not to blame.

Her brother played with all he got instead
and did not see the silent tears she shed.
