The Girl Next Door
The room is darkExcept for one light
Shining on you
The music grows
Swelling into a life of it's own
I look into your eyes
You sing songs with the voice of an angel
With a face only God could have given you
Eyes full of love and pain
Wearing a dress made of silk and shiny rhinestones
You share your life with those who never knew you
But I knew you long ago
You were all knees
Pigtails down to your shoulders
Silver braces in a gawky smile
We played day after day
A tree house built for your brother
Our hideaway from our parents
Bloody elbows and blackened eyes
Talking about frogs and friends
A hug once in a while
And a single kiss on the cheek
I look at you on the stage
Hundreds of flowers at your feet
Your name written a thousand times a night
Those around you love you
But I am the one who knows you
As the girl next door
My friend with pigtails down to her shoulders
