Sanctuary

He takes her hand, watching her closely as all her strong masks fall. She had seemed so strong from a distance, so impenetrable, exclusive, elusive. A flicker of something else, more, in her eyes drew him near. Such a beautiful creature, so distraught, heavy, nearly lost.

She takes her hand back. Knowing that now is not the time for a strong man to save her. Looking up, searching for his eyes, his smile, she sees his face is blank, his eyes fictional as he slowly disintegrates, becoming only a shadow cast on the ground before her.

And as he fades to a whisper of something beautiful, she desperately searches for traces of him.

I approach her and take a hold of her shoulders, guiding her away from the shadows on the ground, brushing the dust off her knees, as she sobs. I let her fall into my arms and hold her tightly as I whisper words of strength to her, stroking her face and letting her cry and wail, before I take her hand and guide her out into the world.

I hold her close to me, never letting her fall to her knees again.

Very captivating . . . the unexpected ending is perfect. What begins as a lament becomes a consoling embrace of survival and self-awareness, indeed self-love.
