Black Rose
I put a black rose in my hair todayFreshly picked from the garland of life
Petals, stiff, hopes slips away
Veins running, never ending in sight.
Looking at this coarse plant
Its fragile security
The way the petals unevenly sank
Under the shallowness of unease.
I traced the lines
Shriveled and crisp
I followed them to the end
They led me to
The center, which stopped
And called me further in.
I thought about the simplicity
And the harshness concealed within
I touched the delicate intricacy
And a petal loosened its grip.
But I pondered on this tragedy
So young, full of life
A black rose, once pure, blooming already
From a bouquet of innocent strife.
A life was taken on this day
As the petal falls to the ground
Blackened by the bitter ways
Hardened by the inevitable, undeniably profound.
I put a black rose in my hair today.
