Melancholy

Fine, I have lost.
I don't accept my defeat
For I have so much in me
To cover all the distance still

And yet I lie lost
What is the big deal
In my being sad
When everyone around me is
And makes no two bones about it

They make no efforts or strive
For happiness
A few good jokes
Or some work done
Or even television
Or some exercise
Will see them through
Their days and nights
Whole, with
No vulnerability to intimacy

Their knowledge of current affairs
Keeps them afloat
And their own perfected backbencher
goofiness
Keeps them popular
They know the latest gossip too
And so are always in demand

They are happy to be alive
Spreading gloom of their
Inner selves
With nothing to offer
To those who seek them

But for me
Melancholy suffices today
I am happy
For its sound
And its spelling
Makes me smile inside.
Yes, beauty is what makes
Me happy.

Beauty is beauty's
Purpose.
That is enough.

That ending is perfect and the truth
Naught else matters

I don't think we can cover up melancholy. Maybe we can appear to be fine in front of others, but it lives inside of us until it leaves. A very good poem about a beautiful but dangerous word.

Kathy Lockhart
Melancholy is a beautiful word. There is beauty in it. The sound of it is like a melody. I suppose. There is hope in your words, really. So, you are honest and honesty is real. Your poetry is beautiful inspired by a beautiful word--Melancholy. So much better than covering it up with pretending. Face to face. Only then can we understand ourselves and change what we do not like. :)
