dead squirrel

i saw a dead squirrel
on the side of the road today
his eyes were open and he was all alone

cars kept passing by
i wondered why they did not
stop to mourn the death
of the poor lone squirrel
and then i realized
that people don't care about squirrels
or sunsets and rainbows

his eyes were open and he was all alone

So sad, isn't it? That no one has time to care about a dead squirrel by the side of the road, with its eyes open and all alone. But someone did. And maybe someone else also did when she moved it to the side of the road. This is so tender and touching. Your words are soft. I like it.

I really liked the line. His eyes were opem and he was all alone. The open eyes but really brought a sense of reality to the poem. Honestly though, I don't wonder about dead squirrels but this poem got me.

i really like this. it's kind of wonderful.

as one who loves watching squirrels, sunsets, and rainbows (as well as one or two other things), and who is upset at the sight of a dead squirrel (or one or two other things), the complete wrongness of this tickles me. of course "people" casts a wide net, but i understand your thinking. i've thought exactly the same thing.

good poem, thank you.
