In dedication to “Sunbeam,” the poet's fictitious Muse of perpetual hope, grace, and light...
with love itself and all that’s lush;
and when the Grecian gods above
unloose her from the underbrush,
she ascends like a fearsome dove
with the wings of a mighty thrush.
With yellow locks, from fair to fair,
and limpid, liquid eyes deep blue,
none are like her or can compare
to her likeness or pearly hue;
which give light to the bold who dare
beseech her for her grace anew.
Then pre-ordained as blesséd Muse,
and well-revered as though a saint;
whom none can spurn nor can refuse,
or with vile words corrupt or taint;
let therefore all beings freely choose,
to worship her without constraint.

Like One in Love
SHE gleams with joy, like one in lovewith love itself and all that’s lush;
and when the Grecian gods above
unloose her from the underbrush,
she ascends like a fearsome dove
with the wings of a mighty thrush.
With yellow locks, from fair to fair,
and limpid, liquid eyes deep blue,
none are like her or can compare
to her likeness or pearly hue;
which give light to the bold who dare
beseech her for her grace anew.
Then pre-ordained as blesséd Muse,
and well-revered as though a saint;
whom none can spurn nor can refuse,
or with vile words corrupt or taint;
let therefore all beings freely choose,
to worship her without constraint.
