There Was A Girl:
Who could dancein the sunlight
beneath the smiling trees
her little sundress billowing around her
her parents watching
with joyous smiles
as she danced until twilight
spinning and laughing
with the bliss
of a little child.
Who could sing
to the stars
in a brave little voice
proud to raise
her voice in song
to celebrate the glory of the night
as she made
a promise to herself
never to let the coming years
rob her of her song.
Who could climb
any tree in the forest
and not slip or fall
or even scratch herself
and often fell asleep
in the trees' cradling branches
protected and loved
loving in return
the stately boughs of green
that kept her safe.
There was a girl
who grew into a young woman.
Who could dance
in the dark
amidst crowds of friends
her dress hugging her body
her parents at home
where they belonged
as she danced until midnight
laughing and twirling
with the joy
of a teenage girl.
Who could sing
to her friends
in a quiet voice
nervous to raise
her voice in song
but doing it anyway
because she remembered
her promise as a little girl
and she kept it
and loved to sing.
Who could climb
any tree in the forest
until she slipped and fell
and nearly killed herself
but still she falls asleep
on the trees' sunwarmed branches
protected and loved
loving in return
the gentle boughs of life
that keep her safe.
There was a girl
and a young woman
who danced
and sang
and climbed as one.
