03 Oct | Update 8

Hi everyone,

We're unfortunately still pretty caught up with our personal life and so we need to put everything on HOLD for a while still.  We're really sorry about that!

As mentioned in old updates, the long drawn-out immigration process which caused us great complications and debts is over, but we've only recently been able to start the process of getting ourselves back on our feet.  All papers and cards for my husband finally in hand (took further months of steps), we're also setting up our stability of life as a Canadian couple... at long, long last.  And as if that wasn't time-consuming enough, my physical health took a turn (in the diagnostic process since July), and I need to take care of that as well.

So, it's really not that we don't want to get on with the work on the site... we need a bit of time for now.  As you know, we really look forward to getting back to it as soon as we can!

Hope you're all doing well.  Be back in a bit...

Isabelle

19 Aug | Update 7

Hi everyone,

There have been many disruptions in the last near two months on many fronts, so it's slowed us down considerably.  But as always, any time we have, we carry on our work in this last phase of clearing up the mess we inherited before moving on to developments for the future.

Also, last month's poll is on HOLD for now before we can conclude it 'cause we can't make any changes in the code yet.  We'll have to come back to it later once our conversions to the new framework is moved on further.

Apologies for the unusually longer delays!  It's not been good for us about time lately 'cause we have life concerns to take care of on our end -- my health is requiring a lot of attention and my husband works outside the home.  We're doing the best we can and we hope things will quieten down soon.

Hope you're all doing well.  Be back in a bit...

18 Jul | Update 6

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note again 'cause telling you all of the details of what we're currently doing now is not exactly interesting (mind you, I know most of these updates are in the same line for the non-tech inclined).  We're rewriting many parts of our code to implement our new framework.  So, that's what we've been busy doing, converting our code files to the new structure.  This involves hundreds of files, so it's a big job that'll take a while.  But the progress is continuing and we're very happy with it.

Hope you're all doing well.  Be back in a bit...

13 Jun | Update 5

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note... the list on the News page indicates that we've completed quite a few things since last update, and marked them as "DONE"; however, they've not been uploaded on the site yet.  That part will come at a later stage once we've completed the conversion of a few more of our files to our new framework's structure.  But things are progressing very well!

Hope you're all doing well.  Be back in a bit...

04 Jun | Update 4

Hi everyone,

I decided to split these progress updates out of the Website Features & Modifications updates because it was starting to get messy!  So, here's where we're at...

We've had a few more hold ups in the month of May (life, health, etc), as well as further needs for changes in our personal equipment's setup, so we weren't able to progress all too much since last update.  But!  We're all set up now, and in the coming weeks, we'll be at it and carrying on where we left off.  Finally!

However, we've had to put a temporary hold on completing the work for the new feature, 'cause while working on it, we came to the conclusion that we really need to finish the cleaning up, restructuring and reorganizing of the whole site's code before trying to add new features.

For years we've been battling all of the issues the code's mess has been causing, so it's right time to get rid of them once and for all to ensure PoetBay's continuation for the years to come.  We'll be in the best shape we've ever been once this part is completed, and we'll have all the space for new features and improvements!  It's getting there :)

Hope you're all doing well.  Be back in a bit...

02 May | Update 3

Hi everyone,

As we were ready to finalize the new feature we want to launch for you, my own PC suddenly became inoperable, stuck in a Blue Screen of Death loop with no way to make it start up.

Sooo... my darling husband had to "hack" the operating system to correct the problems and recover it without having to reformat and reinstall the whole thing.  Losing my files and programs is what we hoped to avoid.

Fortunately, he was successful!  It took weeks to wade through the monstrosity (his words; I wholeheartedly concur) and it was not an easy feat.  But we can now get back to what we were doing:  start finishing that feature! (wow, that's a sentence).

Hope you're all doing well.  Be back in a bit...

29 Mar | Update 2

Hi everyone,

In the last month, we've been doing a lot of work in the code to create a new feature, as well as been doing a lot of reorganizing and restructuring of our code file system and code's foundational setup to clean up for consistency, efficiency, and making future developments more manageable.  The foundational part will take a lot of time ('cause it's as close to rewriting the whole site's code), but it's going very well so far.

As mentioned when we started the repairs in Sep 2019, we inherited quite a mess due to the code having been worked on by 4 previous programmers (who we know about) before us who all had their own way of implementing their bit of code.  So, the natural progression after having done all of the repairs in the last year is to finalize this reshaping endeavor we began to its full conclusion.

Doing this clean up will be very helpful for future developments to not waste so much time looking for what we need to find in the hundreds of code files and which file it's in!  We have wasted innumerable hours over the years because of this...  And, of course, the inconsistencies can create problems or complications when trying to add new features, so cleaning that up will be important too.

Making the whole code structure consistent and clean and organized as it should have been built and maintained from the start will be of immense benefit (no criticism to the previous programmers; these things can easily get out of hand in big projects!)

A small update just to let you know where we're at in our work for the site.  We're hoping to launch the new feature soon!

Hope you're all doing well.  Be back in a bit...

Isabelle
