Simple Thing
Weather hot, O weather cold,
Either way, I'm getting old.
Butter, margarine, milk and cream,
Things aren't always what they seem.
Venus de Milo, armless, nude,
Give me another platitude!
Multi-tasker, sleepyhead,
Look at all the books you've read!
Shave with straight-edge or electric,
Writing rhymes is quite eccentric.
Freeway, driveway, parking lot,
Wystan Auden I am not.
Thomas Campion, old John Donne,
Don't be solemn. Have some fun!
Butterfly and bumblebee,
Silly creatures, dance with me!
Kenmore, Hotpoint, Frigidaire,
I can love both dark and fair.
Mr Coffee, brew my joe,
Cure my constant vertigo.
Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales,
Bateau ivre, spread your sails!
Raindrop, snowflake, hailstone, cloud,
Lowly inchworm, humbly proud,
St Paul's Church and Arch Street Shrine:
I can't write another line.
