Nothing Lasts Forever
She wove a tale of comforting liesthat kept her safe when night fell fast
She wore a veil across her eyes
to make her dreams and memories last
But really, nothing lasts forever
especially not when you're so young
Sleep, dear baby, and may you never
perish before your song's been sung:
For I knew a girl who would save the world
for she loved life dear and true;
But the willful fire killed this girl
so its flames could rise anew...
And I can no longer be part of you.
She spoke to flowers by the road
and kept their secrets kindly
She touched the trees so they would know
she trusted them so blindly
For really, nothing lasts forever
especially when you're just fourteen
Sleep, dear baby, and may you never
live through what I've already seen
For I know a boy who leapt for joy
when the flame-girl opened her soul
But he soon will know she doth employ---
a fearful mind and a heart of coal...
But to hurt him has never been her goal.
He scoffed at her foolish notions
she smiled sadly and sighed
His heart held love like oceans
hers long ago had died
For truly, nothing lasts forever
especially when you're already dead
Sleep, dear baby, and may you never
eternally rest your golden head
For I know a girl in a long white dress
who will never be a bride
She stole a boy's heart with uncharted finesse
and returned it as he cried
"REVENGE WOULD BE SWEETER IF YOU HAD DIED."
And remember, nothing lasts forever
not the sea or the heavens above
Sleep, dear baby, and may you never
forget the ones you love
For I know a girl who was given the world
and tossed it out of her sight
Like windblown leaves her darlings were hurled
but she closed her heart to their plight;
And you, my children, I bid goodnight.
