THE REASON WHY?

I have lost a friend:
Do you know or remember
that feeling in your belly
when you sense the end
of a relationaship
or perhaps an affair?
Sickening isn't it?
Of course this friend
has not said, "I'm off"
or even yet "Goodbye"
but I get the vibes.
Like with pareidolia
I can see the end
in the clouds that
their words paint out.
I'm sad this is ending,
but even so, I will not
ask the reason why.

Allen, the poem is poignant and potent. One laments the circumstances you describe; one praises how well you've described it.

I don't remember experiencing this sensation. I may have caused it by edging away from people who seemed to mean less to me than I did to them. Most of the time, my loves and friendships have had more abrupt, tectonic endings.

I remember the feeling. Sickening is the right word.

I can't recall ever reading a poem about this subject, yet it must be a universal sentiment, or feeling. I can't even think of a Shakespeare quote about it!
