Joaquin Phoenix "Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow"(saving grace)
We are celebrating Gurupurab here- Light of Guru(the teacher) and his message of peace. It just happened that i watched the movie today, which broke my spell.
Napoleon
i am glad my son asked me to book tickets
otherwise i would not have even known about
some such movie
but i know Napoleon
i have read about him
as a student of history and as a fan
for a lot is attributed to him
Napoleonic code, equality before law, civil awards, rise of nation states,
unification of Italy,
so i looked forward to the opportunity
it gave me to showcase my knowledge about Napoleon
i was late to the theatre
for a friend had dropped by
and the son had dropped out
My mom gave me company
but mostly slept through it
and i was agape and glued to the screen
for there was Europe,
my favourite place and with it, Napoleon
my favourite person in History
And while watching
all i could see was war and war
the infantry, the cavalry and the cannon
the devastation as a hobby horse
and a fuel for more
And then it hit me
the Europe as i had known it
was a constructed one
necessitated by its penchant for war
the arts and literature, the architecture,
the renaissance, the philosphers,
the liberalism and existentialism
the fashion, the opera
came with the backstory of violence
the spartan, the Crimean
the crusades, the inquisitions
the balkans and most of all
the world wars
The essays i had written about Prussia
and Brinkmanship of Bismarck floated
before my eyes
clouding the movie screen
Why is that
and
how is that
not one messenger of peace
inhabited the land
and that none could learn to abhor the war
or be moved by the resultant desolation
Much needs to be deconstructed about the
Europeon psyche
Eric Hobsbawm, Edward Thompson, E H Carr
have been of much service to it
to focus on its politico-socio-economic history
but the wars
what about the wars
why not a soul in Europe
whose voice i could hear
who says that war is a violation
and beyond violence
not one redeeming voice
like our very own
Ashoka.
Just one came near
for she has always been near-
Florence Nightingale.
