The Big Human Exchange
A human life
is a sudden gush of time
and then
a blinding darkness
Snow falls off the trees,
rumbles from the roofs
- and seasons change
Can you hear
the multitude of switches clicking
like György Ligeti's Poème Symphonique
for 100 Metronomes
as lives end
and people become things,
and the shrill cries of the Wild
when infants are born?
Can you sense
the Big Human Exchange,
young for old,
when memories become the Habitat of Shadows,
the maternity wards
the Temples of Freshly Carved Faces,
life & death
the epitome of evenness & equivalence,
of disappearance & appearance,
with your place in the flow,
- and all the voices
of all beings
a hum
like that of distant big cities
through the ages
from the vantage point of a raven
deep in the forest?
