after Neruda's Odes
Coffee
Coffee,
electric ink,
liquid midnight,
drinkable sky,
cupped lagoon
of obsidian intent,
pool of brooding,
shock of dark.
Fuel propelling
my lethargic muses,
groggy noggin’s
antic dose
of wakefulness
and whim.
Steal my sleep,
exacting mistress
of bloodshot foredawns!
Tug at the leash
of my balked brain
until it springs
to your service!
Engineer
of urgency,
in you lie hidden
a thousand romances:
toppled fences
and frantic getaways,
secret paths
to a suburban pond,
and afternoons
monotonous with sun.
