If you think you understand Appalachia because you read his memoir, you're wrong.
I don't need to mourn, and I don't need to reflect
Keep your elegy; let outsiders think they're getting a peek
Of an entirely new world -
Of a language they'll never speak
I grew up hearing my dad hack and cough
Needing help to raise up in bed -
from years and years spent in the coal mines
My mama worked two jobs near the end of her life,
but leave it to him to paint the region as lazy and spineless
A region that spans 13 states,
All culturally diverse, all with their own history
I'm sure it's fun to imagine the lower class,
slip on thrifted work boots and say you've walked a mile
Make money from your self-righteous memoir
Slip on that monkey suit and perform all you want
We don't claim you, so stop claiming us
You've milked your so-called heritage and your family enough
Your values are fickle; your spine is string
You compared Trump to Hitler, but now you're his VP
