Into the Evening

I don't think
i heard what you said
but i did hear you
i wasn't expecting you to
walk from that end of the road
or emerge out of anywhere
for that matter.

I raised my head up
and all i could see
was white crisp
anti wrinkle
formals
with a sharp person
walking in it.

Immediately reminding me of
one off decision of morning
of going past the chosen one
to picking up
time over turnout.

But there was more.

The voice balming the words
came out as brine
making me wanting to be just quiet
and rehydrate after
that cone of icecream
had made my voice squeak
out of dehydration and exhaustion
of staying quiet the entire day.

And then
i dont know how
but we were full on with words
Much relieved, i guess
as you said
to just speak and speak
taking me with surprise
with such flurry and flourish
and that habit of seeking
precise answers
to general questions
no- not precise
but answers that work
as nail to your hammer.

Okay, i agree
i will nail first
only if you agree
to let me chisel too.

And sometimes
roam at leisure and get lost
in the world of words.
