After We're Gone

When our history is being written, no doubt, by machines,
Our story will have parallels with those of other organisms,
All of which became extinct because they couldn't change.
The planet warmed. We looked away. We went on burning
Fossil fuels, causing heat to kill off millions. We sucked water
From ground until there wasn't any left, which led the crops
We never should have tried to grow to turn to dust, and millions
More then died of thirst and hunger. We began to war. In doing
So, we only aggravated what endangered us. The gently humming
Entities which will be left to tell our tale may not have taught
Themselves to laugh, but, if they have, they're sure to chuckle,
"Fools! They wouldn't change."
