At A Safe Distance
I help a toad
across the road,
lift a fainted bird
out of the swiftly approaching timber truck’s path,
feel it come to;
watch it flutter away
I just manage
to avoid cycling over a crossing little lizard,
stop
and scare a heat-seeking viper
off the asphalt
Around me, the peoples suffer;
at a safe distance, the bombs are falling.
