The giraffe-
a long-legged fellow, stilting asImmensity itself ,over the vast
savannah, islanded with groves, dwarfs
the elephants and horses while foxes and deer
become mere pigmies. As a giant
browses only on the heads of tall trees, and
watching from its towering neck
could even keep an eye
on the level distance, and knows every
fluttering wing, every leaf down to the
sprawling sea. Holding its up-lifted neck,
looks over the walls and looks down
on the lawn-lain grass but could not
stretch it down enough to grass level,
at its feet to feed itself for despite
its fabulous length, runs short even
when the forelegs are spread apart
and felt the pang of inadequacy
and envies the low-bred creeping grass
which as mere tip of plant-iceberg, reaches
down underground where to meet
their ancestors, all at last descend for good.
