These days I find it hard to answer the question ‘How are you?’ truthfully
This is the closest I’ve come to describing my current state of mind
A dusty picture of an old friendship
A barely used work desk
An undeserving slob
Sprawled on a freshly-made bed
Reaches for a coke can
with two sips of rum in it
When you wake up
in the middle of the night
it’s pitch dark
But wait a few seconds,
and you can see
The longer you stay in the dark
the easier it gets to live there
And even though the light is not out of reach
You don’t bother with it
You don’t get your eyes checked
You don’t answer your calls
You binge
On Swiggy
And TV
It gets easier to stay stationary
without external force
You realise there's no need to keep running to stay alive
The hamster wheel turns without you on it
You're no longer a rat trying to win a race
But you're not a free bird either
You've lost your dusty friendships
And you'd rather sell your desk than be chained to it
Daylight makes no difference to someone living in the dark
So why would you rejoice at a completed revolution around the sun?
There's nothing new about this new year
Throw your empty can under the unsold desk
And go back to sleep
