Acclaimed, accosted, arrested and tried. Released, recluse, and eventually died.
I recently returned to the writings of Oscar Wilde. His life story could have been itself written by his own imaginative pen.

Mr Wilde and other stories...

The genius that called us to his realm
In poetic verse or stories told
Erstwhile we lauded his playful moods
In former days, his discretions they scold
Forsaking his family for a dalliance of sin
A Sodomite of repulsion they jeered
And yet when the cast took their final bow
For "being earnest", the author they cheered
His was that love that dare not speak
To its power he would succumb
For the wanton love of a younger man
In their eyes, a demon he'd become

And to Reading Gaol, De Profundis unheard
With a blunt pencil he sharpened his voice
A century since, the applause is still heard
For this favourite poet of choice

Aye, such a modern tale that probably would be misplaced had he been born today. But have we really changed that much, as a race? Or have we just managed to “rattle the cage” with more heads turning? Quite the romantic tragedy in both fiction and reality. A moving and lasting legacy.
