The Day the Republic Went Away
You wake up one day, and you're in a dictatorship.
All of the things that they told you in school,
The Constitution's rules and rights, the separate
Spheres of the branches of government, gone
Overnight, and nobody has noticed. The rich
Always knew how to handle the government:
Pay it and do what you wanted to do. The poor
Never had any rights anyway, so the people
Around you go on as they have. You keep
Thinking that something important has changed,
But, for most, everything is the same.
