I was too late
I combed her hair
and put her into care,
not far, near by
I told them to be kind
and keep an eye
each day on her .
Her dress sagged from behind
loose at the waist,
she could not eat, she said,
had lost her taste.
I was too late
to hear that silent tap
upon my heart
when she slipped out.
I was too late
to see her softly wrap
her memories around her
like a shroud,
on her way out
