Celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Sir John Betjeman's birth are well underway. This is my little tribute to a great poet, with apologies to William Blake.
Walk upon England's green and developed land?
And did his round-backed shadow cast
A ray of hope on townscapes torn and bland?
Yes! yes! thank God, and what is more,
He built Jerusalem on a Cornish shore.

Homage to Sir John
And did those iambic feet in ages pastWalk upon England's green and developed land?
And did his round-backed shadow cast
A ray of hope on townscapes torn and bland?
Yes! yes! thank God, and what is more,
He built Jerusalem on a Cornish shore.
