Little Fledgling
Little fledglingwhy did you fall
into my life
along that brick wall?
I was finding some comfort
on that May day
then you dropped down quietly
and continued to stay
until you had wings and
a place in my heart
I didn't want you
from the start
but your helplessness
was so hard to ignore
that I took you in
I opened the door
for the gift of giving brought
tears to my eyes
I watched you grow and
then by and by
you would fly through the house
landing on my shoulder
Such a little bird, nothing
would be bolder
Oh, I let you go
on day number 10
You flew from the deck
to a tree and back again
I watched as you practiced
so deligently
with a pride of parenthood
then sorrow, then glee
for I knew it was time
for you to leave my nest
I watched you go; I gave you
my best.
I often reflect now
8 years passed
about the time
I saw you last.
