Broken relationships = sad. I also wanted to use that first line for a long time, and now I got the chance.

Fallen Phoenix

Spinning slow, smoking wings, I see the sorrow in all living things
Once I felt like a canary, smoothing the turbulent air currents
With my delicate wings, bringing song to a lonely valley
Hearing echoes happily return
And now I dont feel the dance of mutual dependency anymore
I dont feel the air under my wings
All I feel is the sun, turning feathery wings to charred boney fingers
I have decided not to be this Sad songbird any longer
Were I to continue, this canary would become little else than a white albatross
The color of innocence.....but also of loneliness
I do not intend to become a millstone for some sea-bound mariner
Whose eyes do not look to my skies, but rather to the horizon
We shared the same future but I realise now
We did not share the same path
I hope I can live life as a mere human again
For these ruined wings shall no longer carry me to paths of pain
Yet I smile as I spiral slower
For even in pain, I determine my own path in this world
And for this liberty, I gladly shed my wings.

The white albatross and the mariner, the weight of guilt that hangs around a person's neck, it comes from ST Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The phoenix, for you, is a resurrection from guilt...just as the Mariner's snowy landscape is a symbol of grace and new life. Every fallen phoenix rises. You have a rich way with words.

A neat echo of Coleridge.
