Dogs can kill

The Menace of Loose Dogs

Anything that can be wielded by the hand such as a gun, knife, or baseball bat can be classified as a weapon. Also any kind of vehicle can be used as a weapon. Do we not agree that anyone who takes a gun, knife or baseball bat and harms or kills a person must be punished? A person who takes a vehicle and intentionally hits another person is punished if caught. A person through careless driving habits such as drunk driving is using a motor vehicle as a weapon.

If someone has the attitude that they do not care how they drive, they are not displaying a respect for life. That person may never hit anyone but there is always the risk when they get behind the wheel.

The above examples can serve to prove this point, dogs can also be used as weapons. Dog owners who allow their dog to attack a person are using that dog as a weapon. That person is in the same category as a person that uses a gun or vehicle to injure or kill someone.

There is a growing problem in my hometown of Jamestown, New York. I have also heard of this problem in other areas in Chautauqua County as noted sometimes in the local newspaper. Perhaps this problem is also in your town, city, or community. The problem is dogs running loose. I mean dogs running loose because their owners intentionally let them run loose.

I have actually seen a dog owner open their door and let their dog run out to do its business. There is a leash law in my town and most towns and cities also have a leash law. These dog owners that intentionally let their dogs run loose are boldly breaking the leash law.

There have been some reports in the local paper of Jamestown of dogs biting children. Some of these dogs were running loose when they bit a child.

Over two years ago my family was experiencing financial difficulties, my mother and I had to deliver newspapers to make money. The local newspaper in my town wants newspapers delivered by 6:30 a.m., so we usually started at 4:00 a.m. to finish in time. Most of the streets we delivered newspapers to it was dark when we did so.

We were chased by a very menacing Rottweiler that tried to attack us. My mother had to pick up a snow shovel behind a house where we delivered a newspaper to scare this dog off. Once we had to get up on someone's porch to avoid getting bit by this dog. Another time we had to throw rocks at the dog. The first time it came after us we were yelling loudly at it to leave us alone. We saw the owner open their door and call the dog home. Once, we saw the owner of this dog open their and let this Rottweiler out.

If you have a very mean and menacing dog you should exercise extreme caution so that your dog does not get loose. Also if you have a very mean and menacing dog you are endangering someone's health and life by intentionally letting that dog run out the door as it pleases.

It is possible for a dog to kill a person. Drunk drivers who kill a person are punished to the maximum as the law allows. Why should people whose dogs harm or kill a person because of their negligence be allowed to get off light according to the law? A person whose dogs kills someone because of their negligence should be given the same length of sentencing as a drunk driver that kills a person.

Things need to change so a person can feel safe and not be attacked by a dog when walking the streets. It is bad enough that there is the potential to get mugged, shot, raped or hit by a car. Now you have to worry about the possibility of a furry missile with sharp teeth and claws coming after you.

The experience with the Rottweiler was not the only time we were almost attacked by a dog. When I was twelve my mother and I were walking on the outskirts of town and my brother was in a stroller. This extremely vicious dog came out of a yard that we passed by. He tried to reach the front of the stroller to go after my brother. Then he tried to go after my mother and I. My mother brayed at the dog and threatened to kick its private parts. The dog still would not back off. It would not even back off when a man next door to the yard the dog came from yelled at it. It turned around and growled at the man viciously. Then the dog's owner came out her door and called nicely to the dog to come inside. She never apologized, "Sorry my dog tried to kill all of you." That dog was so vicious it seemed he wanted to eat us up. What did that lady think her dog was trying to do, give us a kiss with its nose?

People if you are too lazy to take your dog out with a leash to do its business, then you should have never wanted a dog. You should have bought a nice bird in a cage. Then you would not have to break your legs off taking it out for its business.

If you own a pet you have to take responsibility to care for all its needs. If you lack the energy to care for your pet's needs then you should not foist that problem on to anyone else. You are making it everyone's problem when you intentionally let your dog run loose.

I do not care if your opinion is that your dog is an angel, a sweetie pie, and a baby. Just because your dog is the best and most perfect dog alive, your dog has teeth and claws with the potential to harm someone if it chooses to or is provoked.

If you let your dog run loose intentionally and it someday hurts or kills someone, then you should have taken a gun and shot anyone that passed by your yard. You must have desired for someone to be dead or injured because you let your dog run loose.

You are also not caring for your dog because there is always the possibility of your dog getting hit by a car because it is loose. If your dog is old you should never let it run loose intentionally. Your old dog's sight and hearing is not the same as when it was young. Your old dog may not notice or hear a car until that car runs into it. If you know your dog is vicious and you let it run loose intentionally, someday your dog's brains may be bashed out because your dog attacked someone.

I heard dog owners who repeatedly let their dogs run loose say," Its leash broke." In fact this excuse was used by a dog owner whose dog repeatedly chased my mother when she had to place a newspaper on the side porch. Is that your excuse? If your dog's leash repeatedly breaks get a leash the size and strength of a towline. Then your precious doggy will never get loose.

Are all the dogs I see running loose in my town the result of their leashes breaking? On my street I have repeatedly seen certain dogs running loose frequently. These dogs are wandering about as they please and I see no evidence that their owners are looking for them. These dogs are not strays or lost dogs. I have seen these dogs walk home and their owners bringing them inside. If your dog gets loose because its leash broke, you must immediately go after your dog, not letting a day or two go by before you look for it. If you think your dog will head home after awhile, you may be mistaken. A dog can find many interesting things to do if loose for even a short period of time. Why would your dog want to come home right away when there are garbage cans to sniff and many places to dig holes?

Dogs who run loose quite often will follow their instincts more than when they are home. After all the dog's owner is not there to witness its behavior. A loose dog will do as it pleases with no one to discipline it. A dog could believe that someone is threatening it, even if that person intentionally does not wish to do so. Dogs do not have the same thought processes as humans. Dogs never think before they act. Dogs can never comprehend the consequences of their actions. A dog who believes it is being threatened will lash out using its instincts. A dog who injures a person will never worry about the legal ramifications. It will never worry about a jail sentence for their owner. That dog will never worry about the physical and emotional scars a victim will experience. Some dogs who injure a person severely or kill are sometimes destroyed. Do you think a dog has that in its mind when it lunges at someone?

All those worries I have mentioned are for the dog owners that let their dogs run loose intentionally. They are not prepared in their minds for all the ramifications of their laziness in allowing a dog to run anywhere to do its business. They are not exercising forethought and foresight. There is always the potential for a fire in your home, that is why most people have smoke detectors. People will sometimes prepare for the possibility of a natural disaster. Those problems are sometimes out of your control. You can not prevent a flood, tornado, or earthquake from happening. You can prevent your dog from harming or killing a person by not letting it loose.

I am not blaming the loose dogs. A dog who sees a door opened intentionally will go out that door. A dog will not resist the temptation to wander outside its own yard. I am blaming these dog's owners. A dog can be a reflection of its owner's habits and attitudes. A dog that is not disciplined at home and is allowed to do as it pleases will display that same behavior if loose. The dogs that are spoiled and their owners think they have no faults are usually the ones that will bite a person. Sometimes the most vicious dogs are the ones that are angels and blameless in their owners eyes. People should be honest with their own self. Is it that horrible to be honest about your own dogs? If you do not truly know your own dog, then spend some time right now learning about your dog. Then you will not be surprised if it someday attacks someone.

Are all my words harsh? It would be harsher to those who ended up with a prison sentence because they intentionally let their dog run loose and it injured or killed a person. They would forever have blood on their hands just as if they actually took a gun and shot someone. Think this people if you want to avoid a prison sentence then tie up your dog or take it on its leash to do its business. Are you lazy? Do you think the proper place for your dogs to do their business is other people's yards? The toilet is the proper place for you or would you rather run loose and find another place? If you are not lazy for your own toilet habits then why should you be for your own dog?

A final thought: If you let your dog run loose intentionally, perhaps someday justice will bite you in your rear when someone's loose dog comes after you. Then you will really have an excuse for your loose dog because you are now too disabled to take it out.
