To a dear friend when she was the child within

Sonnet 103 The Child Within You

When first I opened tearing eyes to see
first light of day, first night, first quarter moon,
I lay in helpless heap, your arms and me
your flesh my comforter, not warm too soon.

Your breasts, my fountains, fed my child's needs –
your body's warmth – my heat, your mother's way
to nurture by your voice, your loving deeds,
the smile beaming in the words you say.

I grew to love the you that gave me life,
my mother standing always by my side –
to father, faithful, too devoted wife –
angelic helpmate through the day you died.

Now, I am you, and we at last are one
as Heaven's Father, Holy Ghost, and Son.
