I Loved Life When I Was Five
When I was five I understoodthat all of life was precious and good
I loved Jesus and Santa too
belived that both of them were true
I didn't know that we were poor
I had enough space in my one little drawer
to put my clothes cause thats all I had
but to my little mind that wasn't so bad
I slept in a room with many other beds
I laid my head down with my siblings heads
I was safe and warm, though crowded a bit
but I didn't care, I was skinny and I fit
I played with sticks and rocks and rope
got sweaty and dirty but there was always soap
I had something to eat three times a day
biscuits with syrup, soup beans, a potato fillet
it tasted like king's food and I ate it all
I may have snubbed the liver when it came to call
we had no T.V. when I was five
but we had entertainment in our home, live
we played games like I Spy and Truth or Consequenses
we sang and pantomimed and used all our senses
Daddy played harmonica, a jews harp and a comb
he taught us how to tap our feet, to keep our time and tone
but the part that was the very best
is when we settled round Momma like birds in a nest
and she told us stories of sadness and glee
she'd makes us cry and laugh till we'd pee!
I loved life so much when I was five
When God's blessings were so near, so clear and alive
