Death of a Sheltie

Brown, black
burst of white puffing chest
faithful
silent partner

trusting eyes
brows like question marks
exclamation points
no breath
from silent partner

Alert protector
still companion
snarling threat
to danger
stranger
silent partner

Ten years
weak voice
deaf ears
weak limbs
clear limp
for silent partner

Wrapped warmly
carried by strong arms
helpless friend
hopeless to survive
what kills
silent partner

Head lifted
more slowly
still tail
both slowly drooping
eyes sadly closing
forever breathless night
eternal
for silent partner

Kathy Lockhart
this is so tender and full love for your friend. Our pets are apart of our families and they mean so much to us. When they are gone, they leave a void in our lives.
