Macbeth, Act II, sc. ii -- A Porter's Comic Relief
Scene iiA hallway outside the bedrooms.
[A porter waddles in towards the knocking sound of the door, slowly, deliberately.]
Porter. [Not wanting to have to move quickly, if at all.]
Ah did 'ear a knockin' at da door. Comin', comin' awready!
Just 'old yer bloody 'orses, will ya? Geez! I 'ate ta yell;
Dis place is busier dan de gates ta 'ell.
[Loud knocking continues.]
Knock, knock, knock! In da name o' Beelzebub?
Hah! A farmer stands 'ere, 'angin' around
Because 'is crop was crap upon da ground.
Welcome! Well, come -- on in an' bring a rag o' two;
'tis really gonna get 'ot, real 'ot fer you.
[More loud knocking.]
Knock, knock, knock! In de name o' da other devil, what's 'is name --
Ah don't believe 't, an equivocator, liar ('tis all the same);
'e'd swear da truth a lie, and lie, da truth -- both equal weight
But could not lie 'imself inside da pearly gate.
Come on in, equivocator; you'll like it 'ere; 'tis cool.
You find it 'ot as 'ell? Hah1 Ah lied, you fool.
[Still more knocking.]
Knock, knock, knock! Who's knockin' on me door, yet?
Ah, a tailor, who stole all de cloth dat he could get
As well as da design to make it fittin'.
Come on down fo' a long, hot sittin'.
[Endless knocking continues.]
Knock, knock! Seems ta never quit. Who's dat knockin'? Who IS it?
Brrr! 'Tis too cold for 'ell; [wish dey had a 'lectric bell.]
Guess ah quit dis devil stuff; ah jus' can't think no mo';
'tis time fo' me ta do ma thing 'n' open up da do'
Without da other folks who should be there.
[Louder banging on the door.]
Quit bangin'! Ah can't be everywhere.
