The Flight of the Unguided Missal
As the Good Book saysTurn Ye the other cheek
and he hit me again, I says
fer what? he says, last week
ya said sumpin' I didn't like
and I asked him What?
an' befor' he could agin me strike
he said, Dunno, didn't like it a lot
and he left befo' I could knock him down
'cept Good Book says ta turn me self aroun'
an' when I did, da Brut was gone
'n lef' dat uncontested bone.
But, da Good Book says forgive n' ferget
'n let da Lord take matters in 'is 'ands
'n I said Lord, the scales of sin ain't set
t' balance all o 'is 'n my demands.
'n Lord replied, Lookie here, I made you both
'n rules I make for you alone or you 'n 'im
from time you born 'n time of growth
so shut you mouth or sing a hymn.
'n read the Holy Book for me
'n when yer done you'll surely see –
well damned I do 'n damned I don't
cuz by da book I sure cain't win
'n I will not read 'bout sins, I won't
'n by my soul I can't give in.
So, der he went, that vicious brute
wid leery eyes, cusses hangin' on 'is lips
fancy collar, boots, 'n suit
swirling wid 'is sinful hips
alas, he mocks both God 'n man 'n me
as walks 'e all aroun' wid such impunity
damned be he who walks wid dirty look
just beatin'on whoe'er where e'er he went
so heaved I towards 'is 'ead da' Book
in 'is direction dat unguided missal went.
But 'and of God took o'er 'n snagged midair
dat 'oly Book before it reached 'is worthless 'ead
no matter what I feel unjus' o' fair
dat saved 'im from my 'and 'n bein' dead.
So, as book says, Am I still weak
if turn I oft the happy slappy cheek?
