Bolt out of the Blue
The only warning
A hot muggy summer night
Electricity in the air
Lightning it flashes
We are surprised, delighted, scared
Look to the south
Lightning never strikes in the same
Place twice.
It flashes in the North.
Warm rain falls
This July night
With two teenage boys
We stand on the porch
Shock and awe on our faces
As bolt after bolt
Lights up the sky.
Should I be shocked
That my own lightning storm
Is over?
I will never forget
That season of madness
A sense of calmness overtakes me
In its aftermath
I fall heavily asleep
I get up in the morning
And see two boys with sleep
Still in their eyes,
Talking about the night before
Lightning never strikes in the same
Place twice.
