This is what editing is like.

Editing

Like lifting rocks with my tongue
Feeling the cold hard boulders
The gravel rolling around my teeth
It's only work
It's only my unpaid job
Mythic somehow
In it's repetitiveness
How many times have I read this page?
And still I correct
mistake after mistake
Sometimes they jump out at me,
"I've got a fish on the line!"
And sometimes they swim just below the surface
and I only catch them in the corner of my eye.

That word we had for editing
"asspain"
My partner in crime
Safe in her own apartment
Safe with her own ambitions
Uninfected by mine
And I know I can't create right now
only improve
I need to buy ink
But I hesitate, on page 52
Do I really want to go on?
Everyone's a critic.
